The ISO file type basically means data stored in the 'ISO-9660 CD Disc Image'. ISO stands for International Organization for Standardization. A literal dump of the data on the CD, byte-for-byte. ISO files are useful for duplicating or backing up CDs and DVDs. This is different than copying all files from a disc to a solid state drive or hard drive because the disc header information is lost in the copy process. An ISO file can be used to restore a disc exactly to the original version. ISO images can be used as a virtual disc with software like Daemon tools.
